From the 2009/2010 MPISCC President
One “Helluva” A Year

As we begin the 2009/2010, the Board of Directors for MPISCC is excited about the opportunities that lie ahead.

Although a great deal of uncertainty regarding our industry and the economic conditions that will follow still lies ahead, we are reminded that we continue to come through these type of conditions stronger and smarter as an industry.

A personal inspiration for me this year (I was fortunate enough to share at the Installation) is the 1993 ESPY speech by Jim Valvano when he received the first Arthur Ashe Courage award. Jimmy V was an inspiration as he lived with an enthusiasm for life that everyone would want to emulate

In referencing his family, I am reminded of our MPI family when he says, “We hug, we kiss, and we love!” That truly is MPISCC and our family! We are so connected and the past year has made that even more evident as we have all had friends who have leaned on our chapter to assist in a time of need or challenge.

Jimmy V also mentions what we need to do everyday to have a full day: We need to laugh, we need to think (spend some time in thought) and we need to cry (move your emotions to tears). If you can do those three things…you have had a “Helluva Day”!

His most influential message of how to be successful is that we need to know where we have been, where we are and where we are going.

In looking at MPISCC, we have had dedicated leaders and volunteers in the past that are the legacy of our Chapter as we celebrate our 30th year. This is where we have been and is a past we can all look back on with admiration.

So where are we as a chapter? We are financially stable as a meetings association and the board has done a fantastic job of managing the expenses in a time of declining revenues. Not much different from what we have all had to do within our own jobs. Our membership remains strong and our volunteer commitment and participation has never been higher. These are all great signs to a strong 2009/2010 year.

That leads us to where we are headed! We will be focusing on 3 objectives for the year:

1) Member Needs – We know these have changed dramatically as the economic environment has forced changes on each of us this past year. We will be constantly looking for feedback to see what our members need today without getting caught in the trap of what used to be “normal”. We need to create programs that address the “New Normal” we all will be dealing with in the immediate future.

2) Education – We are focusing on the education we provide to be nimble, relevant and specific to industry, roles and trends. This will continue to be a work in progress and we need everyone to communicate with the board candidly on what they would like to see. We understand quality education is still the critical need for the majority of our members.

3) Leadership – Succession planning and the future leadership of MPISCC must stay on the radar as this will determine the long-term success of our organization. We need to continue to develop the “bench strength” for the chapter.

We are excited about the upcoming year and you have a Board committed to working hard for YOU, our members, to ensure we remain a valuable component of your personal and professional development.

Wishing all of you a “Helluva” year!
