| MPISCC Helps Habitat for Humanity |
|
By Elizabeth McDonald, Madame Tussauds Hollywood
On Saturday, May 2nd, volunteers from the MPISCC Community Outreach Committee set off to Glendale to make a difference. The San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity raised $1.1 million dollars for Kenwood Homes in Greenwood. The project includes two buildings of six units each and has been erected in cooperation with the Glendale Housing Authority and the Department of Housing and Community Development.
The 11-home Kenwood condominium development at 711-717 North Kenwood is the most sophisticated urban development to be undertaken by our affiliate. Each home has a two-car semi-subterranean garage, and the three-bedroom, one and one-half bath units rise two stories above the garages.
On that Saturday, Ann Charoensudjai, Adele Santos-Yee, Winnie Tayzon, Steve McCleave, Myrna Media, and Audrey Kerr made a day of it prepping and cleaning the Kenwood structure. They swept floors and flattened nails in the drywall.
A former home recipient family donated lunch for the intrepid crew as a thank you. Ann Charoensudjai said, “They know how important this project is to them. They have been living in their house for six years, now.”
The Kenwood Homes have experienced significant progress in this economic downturn. Rough plumbing and electrical are complete and the windows and doors have been installed. The entire 11-unit complex is now being “blue-wrapped”. The next focus will be on the installation of handicapped accessible lifts for two families that have disabled sons. Funding is still needed for that project.
“It was a great experience for all of us. It felt like Extreme Home Makeover….Can’t wait for the project to be finished. These families will appreciate their new homes,” Charoensudjai added.
The MPISCC Community Outreach Committee fulfills MPI’s core value of corporate responsibility. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is the recognition that an organization is inextricably intertwined with society and the earth and must take responsibility for its actions in regard to the “triple bottom line” of people, planet, and profit.
On June 13th, the Community Outreach Committee participated in the 2009 Ronald McDonald House Walk For Kids. Please see MPISCC.org and future Intercom issues for more information on that event! |

| Annual Gift Giving Drive at The Sofitel Hotel |
|
By: Adele Santos-Yee, Anaheim Marriott Suites

On Tuesday, December 9, 2008, we celebrated our chapter’s holiday luncheon in conjunction with our community outreach’s gift giving drive at the beautiful Sofitel Hotel. The event was attended by almost 200 members and three representatives from our select charities; Ms. Judy Hessick, Rainbow Services; Jackie Broxton, Hillsides and Elisa Perry, Ronald McDonald House of Charities. We had the honor to listen to each of the charity’s presentations and their individual cause. After each presentation, Steve McCleave, Vice President, Finance and Adele Santos-Yee, Community Outreach Chair, presented the gifts and canned goods collected from the drive.
The Community Outreach committee is exceptionally appreciative for all the support of MPISCC members who participated in the gift giving and canned goods drive. |
