On Thanksgiving eve, MPISCC had the opportunity to work with the LA Mission to help serve turkey with all the trimmings to over 4,000 homeless men, women
and children.
This was our chapter’s sixth year volunteering at the LA Mission. Fifteen of us took a few hours off work to join 500 other volunteers and a handful of celebrities. You may have heard Kim Kardashian was there to serve gravy, but what you may not know is MPISCC had a record number of volunteers serving plates of food to the guests. It was encouraging to receive so many requests from members who wanted to be involved in this event.
We hope to gather another group of volunteers in the spring for another special day of serving those less fortunate.
The Los Angeles Mission is a nonprofit organization serving the homeless living on the streets of downtown’s Skid Row. Faithfully for 75 years, they have had a profound impact on thousands of others by providing compassionate, humanitarian services to those in desperate need.

| MPISCC Annual Toy Drive At The Hollywood Museum |
|
By Susan Jamerson, Jamerson Travel
Tis the Season! On Tuesday, December 6, 2011 we celebrated our chapter’s holiday luncheon and toy drive at the nostalgic Hollywood Museum. MPISCC members and friends showed their support by generously donating toys, games, clothing items and gift cards to the charities we support. The toys and gifts were whisked away for delivery at the end of the festivities by Lauren Johnson, from Rainbow Services and our own Winifred Tayzon, CMP on behalf of Hillsides, and our resident Santa Claus, Marc Berkowitz, CMP on behalf of Ronald McDonald House Charities. It was a great day of giving and reaching out to make a meaningful difference in the lives of the boys and girls at the charities we serve.
The Community Outreach Committee is very grateful for the support from our MPISCC members and friends who made it possible to make a positive difference this holiday season.

Want to do something amazing with that those lightly worn pairs of shoes you no longer use or extra toiletries lying around? We have a solution that benefits men, women and children locally and around the world. Seriously! All you have to do is donate your unwanted toiletries (samples and regular sized) and lightly used shoes.
MPISCC has partnered with two local organizations, Global Treads and PATHWays Transitional Housing to run a shoe and toiletry drive that will help individuals around the world and we would love to have your support!
The Community Outreach Committee will have collection boxes, located at the registration area, during the Annual Educational Conference & Marketplace, on March 27, 2012, which will remain up until 4:00pm.
The shoes donated during the Marketplace will be given to Global Treads. Global Treads is a non-profit organization providing shoes for men, women and children locally and around the world. Through the generous network of donors, the organization facilitate new and lightly used shoes to individuals and organizations filling a basic need to a hurting world.
The toiletries donated during the Marketplace will be given to the West Los Angeles PATH (People Assisting the Homeless) Ways Transitional Housing location. PATHWays housing helps individuals and families find permanent housing by providing transitional housing and supportive services.
Please reach out and touch someone by donating.

| San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity |
|
By Winefrida P. Tayzon, CMP
The weather was great on Saturday, October 1, 2011 for eight MPISCC volunteers to work on the Geneva "green" Townhome Project in Glendale, California. A group of church volunteers were also present. The SGVH coordinators divided us into groups and assigned work projects. We worked from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. sorting scrap wood, nails, working on the roof, cleaning, etc. It was a great experience for all of us.
When we volunteered on May 21, 2011 the lot was bare. After 4 ½ months a lot of progress has been made. The projected completion of the Geneva Project is March 2012.
The volunteers were: Susan Jamerson, Renee Frangella, Adele Santos-Yee, Cyrille Hanson, Kristen Jordan-Wood, Christina LeRubio, Ken Tippie and Winnie Tayzon.
San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity builds, renovates, and repairs affordable housing for low-income families in the San Gabriel Valley on available lots that have been donated by the city.
Our volunteers have frequently asked how families qualify for Habitat homeownership. Here are the requirements:
Habitat Homeownership Program
- Need. You may qualify as a Habitat homeowner if your present housing is overcrowded, substandard or dangerous and if other adequate shelter is not available. Families chosen will neither overcrowd nor under-utilize their new home.
- Ability to Pay. The Family Selection Committee will check to determine whether your family has the resources necessary to purchase a home. San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity serves families whose income is 40-80% of the Area Median Income. In addition to a steady source of income, potential homeowners must also have demonstrated responsibility in paying rent and other obligations as well as not having any outstanding liens or judgments.
- Willingness to Partner. Selected home buyers must agree to contribute 500 hours of "sweat equity" to help build their homes and those of their neighbors. This must be completed in part at our construction sites and can also include hours worked in our office or ReStores. Qualifying Habitat families must also be willing to partner with our affiliate on a long-term basis.
- All homeowner families must be United States citizens or legal residents.
- Potential home buyers must live in our service area. You can also check Habitat for Humanity International's website to locate the nearest affiliate.
- No waiting lists are maintained. As soon as the application process opens, we will advertise in all available media outlets and accept applications on a first-come, first-served basis.
- A 1% cash down payment is required.
- San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity is an Equal Housing Lender.
