…. and so we did! The 2009 Meeting Professionals, International Southern California Chapter's (MPISCC) Weekend Educational Summit (WES) represented one of MPISCC's highpoints of the year. The beautiful Mission Inn and Spa in Riverside, CA, was an exceptional setting for the weekend of education and team-building.
The strength of MPISCC as an organization is reflected in the responsive nature of the board of directors who work so hard to develop appropriate topics for discussion based on the feedback of organization members. In his welcoming address, MPISCC President, Michael Dominguez stated the organization's primary goals of member needs -- leadership and education. These objectives were reflected in every aspect of the weekend activities.
The WES Planning Committee, chaired by Laura Bergersen of Laura B Events, did a wonderful job of educating us and keeping us entertained; beginning with the Friday afternoon classes and the now famous, 'Race Round Riverside'! The spirit of team-building and competition were on full display as eight groups of five or six team members set out with a map of Downtown Riverside and a single clue; leading to intense challenges such as games of pool, flamenco dancing lessons and classic TV theme songs performed on the kazoo!
The Mission Inn Hotel and Spa sales team and staff did an extraordinary job of servicing the needs of our group. The food and beverages were delicious and creative; harmonizing well with the picturesque function space. The historic essence of the location created an overall memorable event.
Exceptional educational options were made available for the weekend, enabling members of every career stage and development level to improve their knowledge base. The Technology Track sessions featured the emerging role of social media in our professional lives. Professional Development courses included creating your own brand and how client service is just like a dating relationship. Planners found appropriate topics for every level of experience, including; independent planners and the recession, corporate social responsibility, strategic meeting management and a senior planner round table. The Cyber Café enabled members to set up their Linked In, Twitter and Facebook accounts with the assistance of volunteer staffers. It also served for hands-on training during the social media classes.
Sunday morning's keynote address, delivered by Denice Young of Brighter DAY Enterprises, served as the perfect finale to the previous two days. The enthusiastic delivery of Ms. Young's inspirational talk was empowering to everyone in the room as she shared with us her rules for thriving in times of “Business Unusual.” She expressed the inevitability of change and why we should always be ready to embrace these concepts. Her address served as a “call to action” as it touched each of us personally, encouraging all to review our own circumstances and to open ourselves to opportunity. Go Gung Ho!
