Thank You MPISCC Student Sponsors

At the December MPISCC meeting held at the Hollywood Museum, we hosted four students as part of our student outreach goals.  Of the four students, three are student members of MPISCC as a result of previous sponsorships and members of our student outreach committee being guest speakers at their respective classes. I am happy to report that one student out of the four who attended the December program has requested our student member application, as he will become our newest student member of MPISCC. As a shout-out to all MPISCC members, please know the program works!  With your continued support and student sponsorship, we will indeed be in a position to guide and mentor our future leaders, as they see the multitude of benefits offered for their post college career opportunities.

Rest assured that the student corner will continue to be alive in 2012!  Our student outreach committee will be in full force catering to our current student members and the non-member students we have in our database and via the MPISCC Student Facebook page.  We will continue to send guest speakers to the various campuses in order to introduce our great organization. The student outreach committee would like to thank all past student sponsors and thanks in advance all future student sponsors – you make a difference to our future leaders.

You're Hired! UCLA Conference Services Hires Two Interns

By Kay Boles, CMP, CMM, CHE (Certified Hospitality Educator), UCLA Conference Services

We last reported that utilizing student interns in a hospitality management setting is a win-win for everyone – the organization, the intern, and the industry as a whole. Of course the ultimate goal from the intern's standpoint is to be hired when the internship is over. This is exactly what happened at UCLA Conference Services.

Christine Lee and Sacha Tani finished their three-month internship in September. They were hired and began their full-time career positions as event managers in October. Their alma mater, The Collins College of Hospitality Management at California State Polytechnic University (Cal Poly), Pomona, CA, must be proud!

Their superior work, knowledge, discipline, and enthusiasm made them the obvious choice as Jason Walley, assistant director of UCLA Housing and Hospitality, interviewed several other candidates in the normal hiring process. Their industry education provided the impetus for meeting the challenges of a "real world' hospitality setting. On the job they will be responsible for providing excellent service to UCLA's conference and catering events.

This is a happy ending for the former students' educational efforts, and a new beginning for two bright students-turned-professionals!

Future Leaders Come Together at The Collins College
By Michelle Andrews, Communications Assistant at Cal Poly Pomona Collins School of Hospitality Management

More than 50 hospitality students from across Southern California gathered at The Collins College of Hospitality Management for the Future Leaders Forum in April. The event was created by the Association of Student Event Planners (ASEP) at The Collins College in conjunction with the Meeting Professionals International Southern California Chapter (MPISCC). The goal was to inspire students embarking on careers in hospitality, tourism and event management. Students who attended were able to meet and network with hospitality industry professionals.

The afternoon featured a panel of industry executives with visitor’s bureau, event planning, meeting planning and culinary backgrounds. Esteemed panelists from organizations such as Marriott and BCD Meetings and Incentives discussed their careers, shared their valuable experiences relative to students and gave advice for students set to graduate. Special thanks to our moderator and panelists: Carlos Murillo; John Ehlenfeldt, CMP; Judi Froehlich, CMP, CMM; Beatriz Garcia; Elizabeth Kadlubak; Thomas Mueller; Micole Newman; Sandy Simon; Russ Tanakaya and Dan Vasquez.

Former MPISCC President and Chair of MPISCC’s Student Outreach Committee Laurel Coote thought the event to be a huge success.

“To listen to industry professionals share their stories, inclusive of successes and failures, as well as details of the work they do, and why they do it, sheds light on the possibilities that await students upon graduation,” said Coote.

The Collins College’s Association of Student Event Planners (ASEP) was the on-campus club to help facilitate, plan and sponsor the event. The club works to give hospitality students opportunities to explore potential career paths. The club said hosting the MPISCC forum was beneficial in more ways than one. The students learned how to plan and host an event and established professional contacts within the forum.

Director of Activities from The Collins College’s ASEP Karen Yi worked to coordinate the afternoon of learning and networking. Yi said many students took complete advantage of this opportunity to better themselves as entry-level professionals and to understand the variety of the industry.

“Many people look at event planning and don’t think of every segment,” said Yi. “The diverse group of panelists allowed everyone to see what role each person and each position plays in the event planning industry.”

Annual Future Leaders Summit
Students Gain Insights Into Event Planning And Networking
By Amanda Smith, Cal Poly Pomona student

More than 100 Collins College of Hospitality Management students networked and learned from several members of Meeting Professionals International (MPI) during the Third Annual MPISCC Future Leaders Summit at Cal Poly Pomona Collins College of Hospitality Management on March 3, 2010. MPISCC and The Association of Student Event Planners of Collins College of Hospitality Management hosted the event, which included a networking lunch, panel discussions and workshops to provide students with insights into the event planning profession.

“It was very informative. Students were able to see that planning a single event can touch nine different segments of the hospitality industry and understand how they can relate with one another,” said Collins student Sacha Tani, who helped organize the event.

Companies such as the Walt Disney Company, Professionals in Human Resource Association, InSiteful Meetings, Fantasy Springs Resort Casino, The Eventive Group, UCLA Conference Services, Embassy Suites Temecula and the Mexico Tourism Board participated in the day’s activities. During a panel discussion, representatives from each company were involved in planning the mock meeting. The MPI Future Leaders Forum lasted five hours, allowing students to come and go from panel discussion and workshops as their schedule allowed. Students were able to ask industry professionals questions regarding how to leave a conversation, appropriate discussion topics, and how to dress for success, to list a few. The moderator, Robert Hatfield set the tone for questions and answers as he took the panel and students on a meeting journey that allowed everyone to use their own experiences and creativity in sharing how the hospitality world connects us all.

“Students are always told how important networking is; however, many students are unclear exactly how to act in networking situations,” Tani said. “This event gave them more practice by introducing them to an experienced group of professionals.” As Carlos Murillo, Committee Chair for MPISCC Student Outreach Committee, said: “You Cannot Teach passion, you can only share it and hope everyone embraces it” in referencing his passion for students of the hospitality field and in his capacity as Director of Sales for Fantasy Springs Resort Casino. “Through MPISCC and their belief in giving students the tools and knowledge to pursue this wonderful career, this one event has nowbridged that opportunity for over 100 Cal Poly Pomona Collins College of Hospitality Management students,” Murillo said.

The panelists included:
Michael Vargo, Director Corporate Events, The Walt Disney Company; Rafael Rivera, MBA, CMP, Executive Director, Professionals in Human Resource Association; Carlos Murillo, Director of Sales/CateringFantasy Springs Resort Casino; Kay Boles, CMP, CMM, UCLA Conference Services, University California Los Angeles; David Anderson, CMP, The Eventive Group, Vice President of Membership for MPI Southern California Chapter; Haley Powers, CMP, Principal, Insiteful Meetings; Jose Ma. Barquin, CDME, CMP, Deputy Director, Meetings Industry, Mexico Tourism Board, Los Angeles
